HISTORICAL RESEARCH

 Historical Research:

The systematic collection and evaluation of data to describe, explain, and understand actions or events that occurred sometime in the past. There is no manipulation or control of variables as in experimental research. An attempt is made to reconstruct what happened during a certain period of time as completely and accurately as possible.

Historical research is “the systematic collection and objective evaluation of data related to past occurrences in order to test hypotheses concerning causes, effects, or trends of those events which may help to explain present events and anticipate future events” (Gay, 1981).

According to Isaac and Michael, historical research involves reconstructing “the past systematically and objectively by collecting, evaluating, verifying, and synthesizing evidence to establish facts and reach defensible conclusions, often in relation to particular hypotheses” (1981)

The Purposes of Historical Research

To make people aware of what has happened in the past in order to:

◦ Learn from past failures and successes

◦ Apply them to present-day problems

◦ Make predictions

◦ Test hypotheses concerning relationships or trends

◦ Understand present educational practices and policies more fully.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Historical Research

— Advantages

◦Permits investigation of topics and questions that can be studied in no other fashion.

◦Can make use of more categories of evidence than most other methods (with the exception of case studies and ethnographic studies).

 — Disadvantages

◦ Cannot control for threats to internal validity.

◦ Limitations are imposed due to the content analysis.

 ◦ Researchers cannot ensure the representation of the sample.

TECHNOLOGICAL RESEARCH

Technological Research Technological research proposes stimulating challenges starting from the new scenarios arising since the XX century, the environmental imperative imposes new responsibilities, the industrial production, requires the rethinking of the concept of "material culture" as well as new information technologies lead to new models of theoretical and conceptual elaboration. The Technological Research Methodology describes how technology develops and improves. It is analogous to scientific methodology. SURVEYS

DEFINITION According to  Bhat (2023), the s urvey is a  method of gathering information from a group of individuals by asking them questions. Surveys can be conducted through various mediums such as paper and pencil, online forms, telephone, or face-to-face interviews.  The main goal of a survey is to collect data that is representative of the group being surveyed, allowing researchers to make informed decisions or draw conclusions. To create a successful survey, it’s essential to craft questions that are clear, concise, and unbiased, avoiding leading or loaded questions that could influence the answers. CHARACTERISTICS Surveys represent one of the most used techniques for collecting information on a topic or about people to describe, compare, explain or predict their knowledge, attitudes, or behaviors. Simply, it is a tool used to obtain necessary information (Bhat,  2023) . 1. Sample and Sample Determination First, a sample also referred to as the audi...

ACTION RESEARCH

DEFINITION Action research  is a research method that aims to simultaneously investigate and solve an issue. In other words, as its name suggests, action research conducts research and takes action at the same time. It was first coined as a term in 1944 by MIT professor Kurt Lewin (George, 2023). A highly interactive method, action research is often used in the social sciences, particularly in educational settings. Particularly popular with educators as a form of systematic inquiry, it prioritises reflection and bridges the gap between theory and practice. Due to the nature of the research, it is also sometimes called a  cycle of action  or a  cycle of inquiry (George, 2023) .  CHARACTERISTICS According to Arnold (2007), action research is characterised by clear stages, which include: A consideration of action (reflection and reconnaissance); Implementation of an action for improvement to individual practice; The use of data collection on the a...
